Representatives from five iconic Durban based charities will ‘run their city’ on Thursday 24 September 2020 at the inaugural FNB Run Your City Series (RYCS) Heritage Day Virtual Run!

The five charities are:  Reach For A Dream Foundation (RFAD), TREE, Durban & Coast SPCA, LIV Village and iThemba Lethu.

Established in 1988, Reach For A Dream seeks to inspire hope and help children to believe in the power of dreams.  “We love being part of the FNB Durban 10K CITYRUN.  It is a wonderful event that allows you to see the beautiful city of Durban and caters to all age groups and fitness types,” says Kerry Donkin, Reach For A Dream Foundation Regional Manager – KZN and Free State.  “It is lovely to see that the event is still going ahead, albeit virtually. It allows those who love this event to still get involved and participate.  It’s a wonderful way to celebrate South Africa’s rich heritage.”

Founded in 1984, TREE (Training and Resources in Early Education) is a non-profit organisation that specialises in Early Childhood Development (ECD), Resource and Training development of/for the ECD Workforce with a special focus on Women Empowerment“The Heritage Day Virtual Run is a great opportunity to revive the spirit of Durbanites after the pandemic,” says Ruby Mmatsetshweu, Director of TREE.  “Heritage Day is a great day to connect people and what better way to celebrate Heritage Day.  We are excited to be part of this initiative and cannot wait to take on the FNB Durban 10K CITYRUN virtual course as part of the Heritage Day Virtual Run.”

The Durban & Coast SPCA rescues abused and neglected domestic, farm and wild animals, while promoting responsible pet ownership, providing a shelter for strays, and a veterinary service for pets of underprivileged peopleAccording to Tanya Fleischer, Marketing Manager of Durban & Coast SPCA, the FNB RYCS events are always a lot of fun.  “By being involved with the FNB Durban 10K CITYRUN we’ve managed to raise much needed funds over the years for the animals that we care for.  It’s fabulous that the series will include a Virtual Run on Heritage Day.  We all need some positivity during these trying times.”

Based in the community of Cottonlands, just outside of Verulam in Durban (KZN), LIV Village was founded in 2010 and first opened to mothers and children in August 2011.  “The Virtual Run is a great idea,” says Carita McCririe, Marketing Manager at LIV Village Durban.  “With the current state of events due to COVID-19, it is great to still give people the opportunity to participate and we are honoured to be involved.  It is the perfect opportunity for people to have fun while making a difference in our country.  COVID-19 has changed a lot here in the village, but we are grateful that everyone is healthy.  We look forward to the day that our gates will again be open to visitors and volunteers.”

Since 2000, iThemba Lethu has been a transition home for many abandoned and vulnerable babies and children, providing a safe, loving and nurturing place as we work to re-unite them back into their biological families or find them new forever families through the process of adoption. In conjunction with the Family Integration Programme, the Breastmilk Bank affords the babies in the homes donor breast milk for optimum health and growth.  The HIV prevention programme works to equip the youth and leaders of tomorrow with life skills, leadership skills and education to help them make wise, hope-filled decisions for their lives“It’s wonderful that FNB has continued to be inspired in the midst of a crazy time and adapted so that we can still enjoy being active together in a virtual community,” says Melissa Leslie, Director of iThemba Lethu.  “The FNB RYCS focuses on celebrating cities and diversity.  It is a beautiful idea to centre the Virtual Run around National Heritage Day.”
